B2C: Shutterfly / Desktop Application

When Shutterfly wanted to innovate they created a skunkworks and asked Involution to lead the design

Shutterfly

Shutterfly Studio, a powerful photo management app, was created with speed, efficiency and superb design and engineering.

Involution’s first major client, Shutterfly wanted a new, powerful photo management tool. Shutterfly founder Jim Clark decided that the best way to get a great app in a rapid timeframe was to start a new company to operate as a skunkworks, outside corporate channels. Involution joined that lean team to provide the user interface design and engineering.

We brought our deep experience in product strategy, user research, and user interface design and engineering to bear. Evolving the original product vision into a feature-rich, user-friendly application that equaled or bettered the apps being offered by corporations like Apple, Google and Kodak right out-of-the-box, we worked in a very nimble, agile environment to comfortably mesh with the engineering team.

Early on it was clear this nascent skunkworks project would be a success, and Shutterfly absorbed the project into their core development organization. Branded Shutterfly Studio, the app was integrated into the stable of Shutterfly products and remains a key product years later.

We created detailed schematics to illustrate for Shutterfly the various interaction models we could pursue for the app.

Once the design strategy was in place we jumped to detailed schematics in order to illustrate for Shutterfly the various interaction models we could pursue for the app.

Rapidly building working prototypes of a design is essential to guiding an effective design process.

Rapidly building working prototypes of a design is essential to guiding an effective design process; this is especially true for desktop apps like Shutterfly Studio.

Pixel-perfect mockups are essential during the process as well as in final production.

Pixel-perfect mockups are essential during the process as well as in final production: you cannot effectively evaluate a design’s coherence without seeing how it will look in the wild.

All of the icons and buttons for the dozens of actions and states across a product must be accounted for and carefully crafted.

The little things define the coherence of a good app: all of the icons and buttons for the dozens of actions and states across a product must be accounted for and carefully crafted.
